Understanding behaviors can be one of the most important aspects of care for older individuals. This presentation will discuss the potential causes of “problem” behaviors including regressive symptoms of psychiatric disease, dementia, depression and anxiety. Environmental causes and institutional effects will be emphasized. Specific behavioral interventions will be presented.
  • Describe the behavioral manifestations of “psychiatric” disease.
  • Understand that difficult behaviors may be caused by unmet “physical needs”.
  • Appreciate the impact of the environment on the behaviors of the individuals.
  • Recognize behaviors as a means of communication.
  • Understand the importance of psychosocial interventions as an integral part of care of older adults.
