Regional County Training Forums:

Innovative and Promising Practices for Meeting the Behavioral Health Needs of Older Adults

(A continuation of "Share the Care")

Join with colleagues in the Aging, Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder systems to learn about how Pennsylvania is implementing innovative and promising practices to better meet the mental health and substance use disorder needs of older adults. Each forum will include time for individuals from the same county/county joinder to work together on taking the next step and implementing existing MOUs.

Target Audience: Staff of Area Agencies on Aging, County Mental Health Offices, Single County Authorities are the primary audience, however, providers, consumers, and other interested individuals are welcome.

Forums will be held from 9:30 - 4:00 and lunch will be provided.

Gain a basic understanding of Medicare and dual eligibility with an emphasis on behavioral health access to services.

Participants will become "Gatekeepers" in preventing suicide through "Q,P,R" Question, Persuade, Refer training.

Positive Pursuits:

Integrating Behavioral Health into Long-Term Care

Chandler Hall, a Quaker based long-term care residential and community service organization, funded by Friends Foundation for Aging and the Scattergood Foundation, developed a model to assist providers of long-term care services with the integration of behavioral health approaches and services into their long-term care operations. Behavioral health and long-term care have often operated in separate geographic, regulatory, and financial "silos," with integrated care ("geropsych") often considered the step-child of both worlds.

The model, which may be replicated with or without the workforce element includes:

1) Workforce and Staff Development (to increase staff's skills and knowledge re: behavioral health)

2) Integration of Health and Behavioral Health Professionals (to improve communication and focus on behavioral health) and

3) A Positive Pursuits Program for skilled nursing and personal care Residents (to integrate the preventive and mood-enhancing benefits of pleasurable activities with a "person-centered" care environment).

Join us to learn more about the model and see if it can be applied in other long-term care settings.
